Farmer Notes

The weather has turned cold on us all of the sudden! 70's to low 30's in a week's time. That's Virginia weather for you:) On these freezing mornings you wish you could roll over and pull the warm covers over your head, but no, there are animals to be feed, water to haul (the lines are frozen you understand) cows to milk, and the list goes on. After our morning devotions and a cup of good, strong coffee we pile on the layers and troop outside. As I walk across the driveway to the barn, a beautiful sunrise meets my eyes causing my heart to swell with gratitude to my Creator. All around me the world is coming alive after night. A light mist is rising from the silvery, frost covered fields, a lone bird or two chatter to each other from the trees overhead. The new puppy, Bella lops along after me and then gets distracted by the cat who ignores her with haughty disdain. The lone, bottle-fed piglet starts up with his grunting to let us know he's ready for his breakfast. He hears Katie calling him from across the pasture in a high, friendly voice, "piggie-piggie!" and he makes a dash across the field from the barn, his squeals escalating in anticipation of the warm bottle of milk that awaits him. He nuzzles around her farm boots with his little wet nose, his whole body trembling with eagerness. Katie offers him the bottle which he takes at once, his tiny, kinked tail wiggling in appreciation.

These are just a few of the morning happenings that take place on the farm, seemingly small transactions in the busy pace of life, easy to miss if I'm not watching out for them.
